Colossians (#4): Rugged Redemption

Colossians 1:13-14 is one of the most important and profound sentences in the entire Bible. It contains an incredible summary of what Christ has done on the Cross for His people. In this message we take a look at the consequences of the fall, our total inability to save ourselves, and the glorious implications of Christ’s work on the Cross.

Colossians (#3): Fully pleasing Him

There is much for us to learn in this short prayer from Paul in Colossians 1:9-11. In it we see Paul’s desire for the Colossians to know God and his ways so that they might display God to the world around them. In a culture that often wants to reduce faith in God to mere pragmatism for helpful answers, this prayer expands the reasons for knowing God’s will to something much bigger than just specific instruction for life. Namely, the bearing of spiritual fruit that points people around us to Jesus.

Colossians (#2): The Gospel, which has come to you

Last week we saw how Paul attributes the faith and love of the Colossians to their hope in heaven. As we dig deeper into Paul’s logic this week in Colossians 1:3-14, we see the source of all our hope, which is the Gospel that has come to us and bears fruit.

Colossians (#1): The word of truth

We begin our series on the Christ-saturated letter of Paul to the Colossians. Paul never visited the city of Colossae, but was very familiar with the church there as it was planted by Epaphras, who came to the Lord through Paul’s ministry in Ephesus. Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians around A.D. 62 while under house arrest in Rome (Acts 27-28). The issue he is addressing has been an issue of much discussion amongst scholars. Unlike some of this other letters like Galatians and Corinthians, the reason he is writing is harder to detect. Most likely, he is addressing a kind of folk religious mix of Judaism and some super spiritual equivalent of a new age guru who is leading people into the error of thinking that they have some special religious experience or level because they have some higher understanding.

A Hunger for God

Culture draws us out to sea like a riptide, seeking to make us dependent on everything and anything but God. At the start of this very important year for our church, we take time to prepare for our Daniel fast. For us, this fast will be a way in which we stick our heads above the haze, row against the current of self-absorbed culture, and seek more of God’s wisdom for us.

What does the Lord require?

In this stand alone message from Deuteronomy 10:12-22, we pause on the last Sunday of the year to ask ourselves the question, "What does the Lord require of us?" for the new year ahead.

The Incarnation

According to noted author and scholar J.I. Packer, the Incarnation of Christ is an "unfathomable mystery." That Jesus, who was and is fully God became and is fully man is the most fantastic and awe-inspiring truth in the Scriptures. In this message we examine just three of the many implications of the Incarnation.

Nehemiah (#15): Messy Maintenance

In the last chapter of Nehemiah, we read how the struggle for sanctification continues. Nehemiah had to take leave and check back in with his employer Artaxerxes. When he returns to Jerusalem he finds that things have gone down hill without his supervision, to say the least. In this message, we unpack three mistakes the people made that we make as well, as well as three observations that we should remember as we struggle for our own sanctification in Christ.
