Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
01/10/10
Colossians (#1): The word of truth
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:1-8
Summary: We begin our series on the Christ-saturated letter of Paul to the Colossians. Paul never visited the city of Colossae, but was very familiar with the church there as it was planted by Epaphras, who came to the Lord through Paul’s ministry in Ephesus. Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians around A.D. 62 while under house arrest in Rome (Acts 27-28). The issue he is addressing has been an issue of much discussion amongst scholars. Unlike some of this other letters like Galatians and Corinthians, the reason he is writing is harder to detect. Most likely, he is addressing a kind of folk religious mix of Judaism and some super spiritual equivalent of a new age guru who is leading people into the error of thinking that they have some special religious experience or level because they have some higher understanding.

Colossians (#2): The Gospel, which has come to you
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:3-14
Summary: Last week we saw how Paul attributes the faith and love of the Colossians to their hope in heaven. As we dig deeper into Paul’s logic this week in Colossians 1:3-14, we see the source of all our hope, which is the Gospel that has come to us and bears fruit.

Colossians (#3): Fully pleasing Him
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:9-11
Summary: There is much for us to learn in this short prayer from Paul in Colossians 1:9-11. In it we see Paul’s desire for the Colossians to know God and his ways so that they might display God to the world around them. In a culture that often wants to reduce faith in God to mere pragmatism for helpful answers, this prayer expands the reasons for knowing God’s will to something much bigger than just specific instruction for life. Namely, the bearing of spiritual fruit that points people around us to Jesus.

Colossians (#4): Rugged Redemption
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:13-14
Summary: Colossians 1:13-14 is one of the most important and profound sentences in the entire Bible. It contains an incredible summary of what Christ has done on the Cross for His people. In this message we take a look at the consequences of the fall, our total inability to save ourselves, and the glorious implications of Christ’s work on the Cross.

Colossians (#5): The Glory of Christ
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:15-16
Summary: Colossians 1:15-20 is likely the most dense, beautiful and rich description of Jesus in the Bible. The truth it contains is staggering. Our aim in unpacking these verses is that it would stir our affection for Jesus so that we might worship Him more passionately and fully.

Colossians (#6): The Glory of Christ, Part 2
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:17-18
Summary: Up to this point our study of Colossians has been heavy on doctrinal truth. In this message we take a look at what it would look like for Christ to be preeminent in the culture of CrossPointe by asking several questions.
02/28/10
Colossians (#7): Reconciled
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:19-23
Summary: In this message we look at the beautiful and rich theme of reconciliation. In Christ we are reconciled to God and to one another. And then, as if that wasn’t spectacular enough, we are given the ministry of reconciliation so that through us God makes his appeal to a broken and alienated world.

Colossians (#8): The Purpose of Suffering
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 1:24-29
Summary: In this message we wrestle with one of the most baffling and intriguing verses in the entire Bible. In Colossians 1:24, Paul says that he rejoices in suffering because he is filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions. What does he mean by that? The implications are huge, and help us form a biblical view of the purposes behind suffering.
03/14/10
Colossians (#9): Christ in you
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things

Colossians (#10): Functional Saviors
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 2:1-10
Summary: In Colossians 2:1-10 we begin to see more clearly Paul's purpose in writing to the Colossian church. He warns them not to be deluded with the plausible and false arguments of those trying to lure them away from believing Christ is sufficient and supreme. The situation is no different for us today. Our culture is full of false and functional saviors that promise us a fulfillment that they can never deliver. This message seeks to unpack and analyze the functional and false saviors of our times and how we can discern and defend ourselves against them in Christ.

Colossians (#12): Shadows vs. Substance
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 2:16-23
Summary: In this message on Colossians 2:16-23, we take a look at the difference between the shadows of self-made religion compared to the substance of Christ and His Gospel. We often dismiss religion as the cranky old church down the road, but in reality, we are all religious in that we attempt to self-justify through our own merit and works. In this passage, the Apostle Paul warns us to not fall into the deceptive trap of self-justification and lifeless legalism, but rather to hold fast to the Head, which is Christ.

Colossians (#13): Seeking & Setting
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 3:1-4
Summary: In Colossians 3, the Apostle Paul shifts from the foundational theology of what Christ did for us on the Cross to the impact it should have on our daily lives. If Jesus did this, then this is what it should look like in us. In these first four verses of Colossians 3, Paul encourages us to seek and set our hears on Christ.

Colossians (#14): Christ is all
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 3:5-17
Summary: In Colossians 3 Paul shifts from the great doctrinal truths of the first two chapters to a look at what impact this theology should have on the lives of believers. In Colossians 3:5-17, we unpack some practical and pointed truths about living the Christ life.
05/16/10
Colossians (#15): Whatever You Do
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 3:18-4:1
Summary: In Colossians 3:18–4:1 we study the direct and simple exhortations from Paul about what impact the Gospel should have on our home and work lives. For the Christian, there should be no compartmentalization of life. Rather, whatever we do, whether at home or work or play should be reflect Jesus.
05/30/10
Colossians (#16): Making the Gospel Clear
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 4:2-6
Summary: In Colossians 4:2-6 Paul encourages the church to pray that God would open a door for the Gospel and that he would make it clear. That Paul would request prayers for Gospel clarity is very instructive to us and something we should also strive to do. Thus, in this message we take time to clarify and reiterate the Good News of the Gospel.

Colossians (#17): Life Together In Christ
Series: Colossians: Rejoicing in the Supremacy of Christ in All Things
Preacher: Brad Evangelista
Passage: Colossians 4:7-18
Summary: The last message in the Colossians series looks at Paul’s final instructions to the church. On the surface, Colossians 4:7–18 seems like a relatively unimportant few verses. But when we dig deeper we see a beautiful picture of what life together should look like for people striving to center their lives and church around Jesus.
