This Sunday: “The Gospel-Shaped Life (Pt. 2)”

Dear CrossPointe,

When I was a child, one of our family dogs was a Chesapeake Bay retriever. They are majestic dogs bred for getting in and out of the water. Our dog could jump in a lake, climb out, shake, and be dry in seconds. It’s like he never really got wet!

That’s picture I get when I read our text this week, Romans 12:14–21, in which Paul continues to describe the gospel-shaped life. We live in a hostile world that wants to pollute us and conform us to its image. It wants to get us wet with self-defensiveness, lowering our gaze so that we focus on our glory rather than God’s. But Paul’s point in this text is that the gospel frees us from this self-absorption and self-defensiveness. Knowing that we are right with and loved by God frees us from needing the approval of the world. And knowing that God will finally and fully execute his justice on the earth humbles us and reminds us that God is wiser than we are and can be trusted to do what is right.

I’m looking forward to finishing chapter 12 with you. Let’s come ready to lean forward together.

Grace and peace,

Brad
