This Sunday: “It Depends on God”

Dear CrossPointe,

This Sunday we continue to wade through the deep waters of Romans 9 as we study verses 14–18. In this paragraph, Paul answers an anticipated objection about what he has just said regarding God’s purpose in election in the preceding verses. Instead of hedging about God’s absolute sovereignty, he doubles down on it and asserts that God is free to grant mercy to whomever he wills and harden whomever he wills. Again, these are deep waters, but they are for our good and are intended not for controversy but for our comfort and confidence.

I really encourage you to read the text a few times before Sunday. Spend some time in Romans 9. Read the whole chapter numerous times in one sitting. Pray for God to encourage us and understand what is Word is saying to us. And pray for God to grant mercy and soften hard hearts this Sunday as we gather.

Also, on this first Sunday of September, we’ll come to the Lord’s Table and receive communion together. Let’s prepare our hearts to feed on the gospel.

Grace and peace,

Brad
