Jesus, the King on a Cross
CrossPointe,
This Sunday we arrive at the pivot point of Mark’s gospel, 8:27–9:1. Up to this point Mark has been concerned with demonstrating who Jesus is. And, in this text Peter rightly confesses that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah from heaven. While the disciples show signs of understanding Christ’s identity (although not yet fully), Jesus begins to teach them about his mission. And what he has to say turns their paradigm upside down.
Yes, Jesus is the Messiah, but not like they think. He is the King who has come to die, and all those that follow this King must also die to themselves. Take some time to read Mark 8:27–9:1 slowly a few times before Sunday, and pray that Christians will see Jesus more clearly and unbelievers will see him for the first time on Sunday morning.
Grace and peace,
Brad
