The Great I Am

John 848–59

Dear CrossPointe,

What really offended the religious leaders about Jesus was not so much his miracles and teachings but his claims of divinity. We see this in our text this week, John 8:48–59, where Jesus uses the same expression to describe himself that God the Father used while speaking to Moses through a burning bush. This enraged the crowd and they even ask him, “Who do you think you are?” What a question to ask the One who is God incarnate! His response, especially in relation to their forefather Abraham, made them so mad that they picked up stones to try and kill him.

So, what are we to make of this reaction by the crowd? What can we learn from it? Why is so important to understand what Jesus is saying about himself? My hope is to help us think through these questions this Sunday.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all!

Brad
