“True Religion”

On this first Sunday of 2020, we’ll dive back into James and consider the last two verses of chapter one. Remember, James has been exhorting us to not merely hear the word but to actually do it. That’s the heart of James’ concern—that the authenticity of our salvation be validated by the obedience that flows from our faith. And in James 1:26–27, he sketches out a brief summary of what this obedience to the word should look like in three categories: our tongue, our mercy, and our purity. As we prepare to study this passage together Sunday, join me asking the Lord to convict, change, encourage, and make us all more like Jesus.

Also, as we’ve been doing for several months now on first Sundays, we’re asking everyone (members and guests) to make a name-tag at one of the stations in the foyer and be intentional about meeting someone you don’t yet know. January is a time when people often give church a try. A member who has their head on a swivel, a warm greeting, and an encouraging word might make all the difference in softening a visitor’s anxious or suspicious heart. Let’s come ready to love people this Sunday and every Sunday.

We’ll also receive communion together this Lord’s Day. Praise God for this family meal that refocuses our minds and hearts on what Jesus has done for us. Let’s prepare our hearts as we come to the table.

Happy new year, CrossPointe! I’m looking forward to serving the Lord with you in 2020!
