“The Good Neighbor”

Dear CrossPointe,

This Sunday we’ll be taking a break from 2 Peter to study a classic Bible story from the Gospel of Luke, “the good Samaritan” (Luke 10:25–37). You’re probably familiar with the parable Jesus shares even if you’ve never read the text: a man gets beaten close to death by a band of robbers only to be ignored by two men who should come to his rescue. In the end, one man, an “unclean” Samaritan, shows him compassion and generously saves his life.

This tale is frequently used to encourage people to be kind to one another. We even have laws named after this anonymous do-gooder. But what's often missing from discussion of this parable is the lawyer with whom Jesus shares it. We learn a lot about human nature from his attempted debate with Jesus. We learn even more about the Gospel from the correction Jesus offers.

I hope you’ll read the text a few times before Sunday and come to church eager to be encouraged but also challenged by the Word of God.

Blessings,

Robert
